SSA Blog #029      By Michelle Drew     December 13, 2005

Yesterday we  returned from the Elk Refuge up in Jackson Hole. While it was certainly a joy to behold, the lesson in wildlife and the food chain was not. While watching the elk graze and wander and rest, I noticed a group start to run. I called to Robert that a group was running, and that although they had stopped, they were all looking in the same direction. Robert looked and pointed out a pack of 5 wolves that were running toward the elk. I dropped the binoculars and ran. The thought of those peaceful elk about to be savagely attacked and eaten was just too much for me. While I sat on the bed crying, Robert watched the pack of wolves. They continued running through the refuge, and out of sight.

Clearly, Robert has a much better acceptance of nature and predators and the food chain than I do. For me, it was a lesson about nature that I am glad I didn't have to see. What to us was a pastoral scene, was to the wolves, an all you can eat buffet...

Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves,
some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all.
