Douglas Wood is
a long time friend of ours and this column. Some may
remember the story of our meeting. Douglas is still up to his old
tricks: working and living in God's name. Last week, our blog featured
an essay by Steve Goodier. It speaks of chickens and eagles and loving
one's self. This essay inspired Douglas to write the following essay.
After reading it, you may understand why we cherish our friendship with
this very special man.

YOU WERE MEANT
TO BE YOU by Douglas Wood
This story
reminds us how important a HEALTHY self-image really is.
A woman found an
egg. She knew not what kind of egg it was.
She loved the
egg - and cared for it - and it hatched.
The child of the
egg did not look like her - but she loved it
anyway.
She knew the egg
was not human, but she did not know for sure what
it was.
It looked like a
chicken egg.
She loved the
egg and the child of the egg - because she cared for
it.
The child grew
in the love of the mother, knowing that whatever it
became
was good -
because it first was loved.
One day the
child - now almost an adolescent looked up - and saw
an eagle
soaring on the
updrafts.
"What is THAT?"
the child asked, pointing.
"It's an eagle,
one of God's creatures," said the mother.
"WOW! Can
I be one of THOSE?" asked the child.
The mother
laughed gently, and hugged the child.
"No, I think you
are more a chicken than an eagle. But
chickens feed the
world, my love!
And *I* love you!"
The young one
loved being a chicken. She could not soar, but
she could
serve as she
was She could scratch, and peck, and lay more
eggs, and serve.
You were meant
to stand and serve, no matter who - or what - you
are. If you
do not believe
in yourself, it is no matter. God - and those
who love you -
believe in YOU.

Time is the coin

and only you can
